Shivaji was born on February 19, 1630, in the hill fort of Shivneri in present-day Maharashtra, India. Shivaji was known for his strong associations with the present day Maharashtra state.

The plant Shiv Suman was found near Shivneri fort by a British botanist and scientist named Nicol Alexander Dalzel in 1865. The place is said to be the birthplace of Ch Shivaji Maharaj. He was born at Shivneri, a hill fort near Junnar in Pune, to a Maratha family. This is the place where the plant was first discovered.

Scientifically called Frerea, the Shiv Suman plant is a critically endangered species and was once placed in the list of the 12 most threatened plants on the planet by IUCN. The plant is a fleshy perennial succulent herb. The Shiv Suman plant is known to be located in the north western regions of Western Ghats, namely in Nashik, Pune, Raigad and Satara.
