  • Make sure the soil is kept slightly damp if you are growing your plant in soil. Don’t allow the soil to dry out arid but don’t overwater as it can cause root rot. 

Bamboo does not need much water to survive, but it can be grown in water as well. 


  • Ensure that the roots always stay covered with water, when growing your bamboo in water. To keep it flourishing remember replenishing your lucky bamboo with fresh water every seven to 10 days. 

  • Remember refreshing the water at least once a week as unkempt waters can harbour the growth of Algae. Make sure to clean the container and change the water regularly (about once a week). 

  • If you plan on using tap water for your bamboo plant make sure the chlorine levels are low. One way to do this is to leave tap water out overnight so the chlorine can evaporate before using the water for your lucky bamboo.

  • Distilled or bottled water is always a much more suitable and reliable option. As water bearing any amounts of chlorine is bound to negatively impact the plant.
